Loud, dumb stuff can be fun but in "The Righteous Gemstones" it's all too easy; the jokes are tired, the characters broad and buffoonish, the plot turns lazy. Heaven help us.
It's brilliantly done in a wonderfully subversive highly cinematic style that reminds one of the Cohen brothers' mischievousness, that distinctive mix of wry humour, eccentricity and darkness.

The Righteous Gemstones might be the funniest show currently on television, and it's certainly the funniest show I've ever seen about grief.

Distinctly uncomfortable to watch, and [reveals] a sad, surreal, and often funny truth about the American dream: to attain it, dreamers run the risk of blindly believing they're entitled to anything.

The show barely scratches the surface before reverting to a more conventional crime-dramedy mode. And so the familiarity of McBride's M.O. disheartens.
With that tight focus on these characters comes a need to differentiate them from similar characters we've seen before. That's the show's most significant flaw.
