Critic Reviews for The Americans: Season 3

All Critics (53) | Top Critics (26)

The Americans is only getting better with age, answering its questions as it builds upon them -- even if the solutions don't come easy.

Comrades the Jennings may be, but Elizabeth is first among equals, and The Americans is the story of her antiheroism above all.

The Americans remains one of prime time's best series, the only negatives at this point being how complicated the plotting is, to the degree at which we almost need a flow chart to keep up. It's a headache, but a great one to have.

The Americans also remains a sharp, emotionally rich portrait of the politics of family life. You can fully enjoy the story without following the espionage material closely.

The Americans remains the best show on TV about family -- and, you know, the best show on TV -- because it is both tender and unflinching in its examinations of lies big and small, "good" and bad.

The close calls are starting to feel a little redundant, but the looming human drama in season three of The Americans should keep it near the top of the spy pack.

Audience Reviews for The Americans: Season 3

Yet another very solid entry onto the show but it's becoming quite evident that it will never be able to surpass its solid quality. Maybe it's time to start thinking about wrapping up this soon, since the pace is too slow to go beyond 5 seasons and with such limited production values, it's better to end on a high note, than a low one. We're starting to thread on repetition here and that's never a good thing for a show that has very little audience.

The third season of the Americans represents both a return to mature television and a slow-burn espionage thriller. It continues to feature excellent performances from an ensemble cast, and a story-line that places emphasis on it characters and never loses sight of what makes any drama effective. This season placed more emphasis on the family dynamics at play, which injected the show with a unique wrinkle that further distinguished it. The Americans also continues to develop its characters- the world they live in feels lived in, the changes organic to the story. For all it does right, this season is, on a whole, devoid of some of the same thrills that made the first two seasons enthralling. Its slow burn became a bit bogged down and, by the finale, there’s a bit of underwhelming climax. Still the pieces are there for a great season going forward.
