Critic Consensus: As generous and game a performer as ever, SNL GOAT Will Ferrel joins the five-timers club in an uneven episode that plays thanks to the commitment of its talented host.
Critic reviews for Will Ferrell; King Princess
As an all-time great cast member, one of the best things about Will Ferrell as a host is that he's not afraid to share the comedic spotlight with others.
The end result offered some laughs, but was hardly funny enough to justify the menagerie, which basically describes the whole episode.
It was the best monologue of the still-young season, and one of the many highlights from this weekend's above-average show (which admittedly got off to a rough start with that lazy, laugh-free cold open).
While I was hoping to get a little bit more from Will Ferrell returning to Saturday Night Live for his fifth time as host, this was still a fairly enjoyable episode.
This is basically the kind of monologue only Ferrell can pull off. Tracy Morgan shows up and it goes off the rails, in the best kind of way.
