Tv Season Info

Opinionated and loyal, Janay (Dede Lovelace) is strong willed and stubborn in ways that both help and hurt her. Honeybear (Moonbear) is a quiet storm. Her flagrant style is a ruse; an armor she wears to hide her emotional struggles. Kirt (Nina Moran) is a lover (to the ladies), a fighter (to the rest of the world), and a little kid in the body of a woman. She's the funniest person alive, but even if she knew it, she wouldn't care. Meanwhile, Indigo (Ajani Russell) is a street-savvy hustler trapped in the body of a well-to-do art school drop-out. On the edge of the group is Camille (Rachelle Vinberg), guarded, perceptive, intelligent and awkward. She wants to be down with the dudes in the skate park and has fought hard for the small space she's carved out with them, but she needs to realize that cool points don't actually add up to the sum of anything, especially in the eyes of the other girls.

Much of the charm of "Betty" is in the actual skateboarding shots, which are arresting even to someone with very little knowledge or interest in the sport... It's unfortunate that [it] is mostly style over substance.

Is it possible that young skater girls will tune into "Betty" just to see themselves represented on screen? Maybe. Their real lives, though, are surely more interesting than this.

Betty isn't a show made to shatter glass ceilings so much as it is to empower those pushing against it.

The result, though far from flawless, is a wonderful, breezy show about female friendship, buoyed by Mossel's signature direction and an authentic script from her writers. One of the best new shows of the year.

Betty feels timely and urgent but simultaneously, per Moselle's style, dreamy and whimsical. There's a hard edge to these young women and a defiance to how they operate, but that fierceness guards not fragility, but tenderness.
