Lacks all the self-aware irony it needs to be a satirical commentary, but neither does it have the lightheartedness of a rom-com or a feel-good friendship film.

Having Manhattan, NY as the backdrop of a story revolving around single womanhood has become a cliché unto itself - 'Someone Great' lacks substance, flavor, and depth.

There's potential here for a kind of zeitgeisty farce... and yet Someone Great manages to undermine its capacity for novelty at almost every turn, remaining sadly compliant with the beats of the genre it seeks to uproot.

While the latest Netflix-produced rom-com struggles to decide what it wants to be, it seems clear from the outside - this should have been a TV series instead.

Witty banter, but superficial, glib and exhausting.

Rodriguez squeezes humor out of the bland writing regularly, but there aren't too many actual jokes. It's all hyperactive situational stuff.

Like being the designated driver while your friends forget all their inhibitions for one crazy night. It stops being enjoyable long before it's time to call it a night.

What "Someone Great" is missing is anything that punctures its rom-com bubble. At no point is there any doubt that the power of friendship will triumph.

Much of the dialogue seems sketchy and peppered with too many crude comments, but I admire this rom-com's emphasis on diversity and friendship.

It's a warm, funny and familiar exchange between friends, much more romantic than any display of affection I've seen between two people at the end of a typical rom-com.

It's a female led comedy with heartbreak, self-worth and self-realization at its core. The film is both raunchy and emotional, and is backed by an outstanding cast.

It's very funny and offers up plenty of heartwarming fodder for the sentimental among us.

With a witty script, Director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson uses heartbreak humor, friendship and a fantabulous RuPaul cameo complete with baby sharks to ease the breakup pain of letting go. Gina Rodriguez and Lakeith Stanfield are electric!

Someone Great is essentially easy to watch, and will keep you entertained with its talented cast, but if you're looking for a rom-com, this is not it.

A nuanced, perfectly-soundtracked comedy about heartbreak and friendship that shows a queer relationship as a secondary romantic plot to the straight break-up is a pretty great offering to the canon.

The result is akin to a tepid attempt to cross Broad City with Blue Valentine.

Someone Great ditches the tropes that typical romantic comedies fall into and instead challenges its audience to focus on self-identity and self-love.
April 22, 2019
If nothing else, Someone Great is a quick film to breeze through and certainly a showcase for its stars
April 25, 2019
The beautiful thing about tropes is that they go down easy when you're just looking for a fun movie to pass the time.

Someone Great is a perfect "Girls Night In" film, and one you'll want to revisit again and again.
