Daniel Stern gives a moving performance as a crabby old physicist jumping back decades to prevent his past mistakes.

Well-meaning but crass time-travel comedy has drinking, pot.

Amusing but off-key in some unhelpful ways, it's a dorky time-killer that doesn't suffer too much for its familiar vibe.

...the film is a blessed novelty, both as a rom-com and as a time-travel story. Let's face it, we've seen a few too many Terminator chapters to expect something this fresh.

This is a film that savours conversational awkwardness and amorous fumblings, and takes its time developing a sentimental payoff.

James Vs. His Future Self goes down the well-worn path of a guy who needs help with romance, but it brings enough new to the game to keep it interesting.

The film is too slow in places, sagging a bit in the middle as it comes to rely too much on the romance, but the witty script delivers plenty of laughs and despite the highbrow subject matter the writers are not afraid of lowbrow humour.

Jeremy LaLonde's movie is a fun blend of sci-fi, comedy, and critique of the modern relationship to identity; it doesn't always stick the landing in an attempt to balance these disparate elements but is certainly worth looking out for.

The story has a strong plot-line and wonderful cast who portray their characters well for a heartfelt film based on discovering to spend your time in the present.

By focusing on the human element, it becomes an affable, surprisingly-tender dramedy that uses sci-fi as a boost rather than the endgame.
March 9, 2020
An intelligent and well-drawn character piece, with an engaging lead performance that dances comfortably between the cerebral and the silly.
