(Written by Adam Solomons) A triumph of human exploration, in all its colour, confusion, depth and beauty.

A stylish nightmare that doesn't answer the relevant questions, and prefers to exploit the darkest corners of human nature. [Full review in Spanish].

The narrative's non-linear unfolding is shot through with a strangeness that rewards repeat viewing.

It goes out into the universe to look in...it is first and foremost a film by Claire Denis.

Leave it to Claire Denis to approach science fiction by rewriting all the rules. This is an extraordinary film.

Claire Denis's High Life is a sensually intimate journey that overwhelms. An intoxicatingly wonderful space odyssey into the psyche of the human condition.

By interrogating the infinite through the harshly, painfully intimate, Denis gets at the stuff of life itself while proving there's no real difference.

This is a wholly uncompromising, deeply evocative and highly intelligent piece of work.

High Life will send you back out into the world with a totally new idea of what black holes symbolize. It is an elliptical film, yes, because it will answer only the questions that you did not think to ask.

The fact remains that this blank expanse provides no full explanations, leaving a great amount of subsequent pondering. Commonly amongst the director's work, this is rather more enjoyable than actually watching the film.

Human nature and Mother Nature come to blows with uncomfortable consequences in this disturbing, mystifying sci-fi odyssey.

Pattinson is as subtle, exacting and unpredictable as he's ever been, transmitting bone-deep loneliness and resigned fatalism with very little dialogue to help him.

It's heavy, angry stuff. A film that lashes out at humankind as a species of grunting thugs entirely at the mercy of the procreative impulse. It ends with an uncharacteristic touch of optimism, but it's little and late. You'll need a stiff drink.

Effortlessly arthouse (Cryptic? Check! Slow-moving? Check! Nudity that couldn't possibly be gratuitous? Check!), this will not be everyone's cup of space dust, but it might make you ponder the chaotic futility of existence.

High Life asks us to consider the passion - and the terror - of crossing the event horizon to cast off the laws that bind us and live another day.

It is at times a brutal watch, with scenes of extreme sexual violence that do not hold back in the slightest - but in a rarity for modern cinema, are only there to serve the story.

This is a dark, gripping, unsettling film, in which human needs engulf the delusions of ethics.

Veteran French director Claire Denis' first English-language film is a fascinating mixture of highbrow and B-movie elements.

The slow pace and pretensions of High Life make it hard to love and it's distinctly challenging for the squeamish. But it's quite possible to admire its bravura performances and the director's design choices.
