All told, the listlessness that Shakespeare feels upon returning to his sleepy hometown from glitzy London seems pretty similar to what it's like to slog through this movie.

Shots of Stratford are as glistening as they are naturalistic. But if Shakespeare has taught us anything, it's that "All that glitters is not gold."

Honestly there were times when it seemed a half step away from a Monty Python or Blackadder sketch

Alas, rather than model itself on Shakespeare's own history plays, which carefully select and structure events with an eye toward plot and theme, All Is True is an overstuffed mess.

Kenneth Branagh... bungles All is True worse than Malvolio with a letter from Olivia...

...it ends up being much ado about nothing.

Engulfed in bitter sadness and sweet sentimentality which, at times, loses itself to overwhelming grief.

Despite handsome production values and fine performances, Kenneth Branagh's latest directorial effort cannot overcome the trappings of a stuffy yet slow period piece.

Forget all of it being true; I would have settled for some of it being interesting.

All is True maybe delivers just enough to maybe please the Branagh and Dench diehards, but it's an insubstantial and frustrating film for the rest of us. Shame really.

Ultimately, it's a bit on-the-nose, and the disconnect between Shakespeare's genius for character and his befuddled attempts at personal relationships makes for a man too bifurcated to believe, as if the fire that gutted the Globe also burned his brain.

This is leaden, lifeless, sentimental and afflicted by too many sub-plots that just don't go anywhere.

Considering the film's subject, a different focus and more strictly faithful narrative might have delivered a more resonant experience.

Vintage shameless Branagh, borderline unwatchable, but also a weirdly perfect cap to a career built on flavorless yet vainglorious Shakespeare adaptations.

All Is True could be called Shakespeare In Grief.

Perhaps the most insurmountable issue is the contrast between the quotes from Shakespeare's sonnets and plays and the trite dialogue he's given here.

How do you make a legend as imposing as Shakespeare flesh? "All Is True" suggests you can't, if not even Branagh, Dench, McKellen, et al. can bring him down to earth.

The movie's impressive appearance notwithstanding, Shakespeare's domestic problems do not a classic make.

Much as with Anne Rice's The Young Messiah, the film's use of an historical frame adds nothing vital to its story and creates an expectation of truth adjacency that it lacks the skill or imagination to meet.

Some will enjoy this imagining of Shakespeare's world but I struggled to see the value.
